Mission
The Sylvan Beach Foundation is an entrepreneurial non-profit organization that
simultaenously pursues both a financial and social return on investment -
something we like to call, the double bottom line. The mission
of Sylvan Beach is to create a community of responsible young adults who help
one another develop lives of purpose and self sufficiency. The mission is
accomplished in a family setting where the residents live, work and learn together.
Sylvan Beach is primarily self funded by the profits generated by Foundation-owned
and businesses. The businesses - currently the Sylvan Beach Cafe and the
Sylvan Beach Homemade Ice Cream Company - are operated and managed by the
residents, mentors and graduates of the Sylvan Beach Residential Community.
As an organization, the long-term goal of Sylvan Beach is to develop a self-supporting outcome driven, wealth creating, non-profit organization that is operated and managed by the young adults who have graduated from the Sylvan Beach Residential Program. For the graduates of Sylvan Beach, the long-term goal is simple - to develop lives of purpose and self-sufficiency.
Description
The Sylvan Beach Foudnation utilizes a holistic approach in serving disadvantaged
young adults, 18-22 years old. The major components include; housing, job training
employment, career opportunites, counseling, academic instruction and life skills
training. The foundation is located in the heart of Baltimore City's Art and
Cultural district. Our neighbors include the University of Baltimore, the
Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, the Lyric Opera House and the Maryland Institute College
of Art. The great location serves two purposes: it keeps our residents removed
from many of the cities negative influences and provides them with a positive
and encouraging environment.
